Anniversaries (Year 2000) of "Oka" and "Sexgarage", both political events documented by Montreal photographer Linda
Dawn Hammond, two series of images of that volatile summer of 1990 were merged in an exhibit entitled, HOT
JULY. Go To OKA WEB
Exhibit!!! "Behind the Barricades: OKA" is a
series of documentary photographs taken during the "Oka Crisis" of
1990, in Kanehsatake and Kahnawake. The images cover the warriors,
community life behind the barricades, the army manoevers, the
teargassing on the bridge in Kahnawake, the peace camp and subsequent
support events. The web site is a work-in-progress. Go To SEXGARAGE WEB
Exhibit!!! The "SEXGARAGE" incident occurred
during the same summer as the Oka Crisis. On July 14, 1990 in Old
Montreal, an underground party which included many members of the gay
and alternative crowd was closed down by the cops. 32 MUC police
moved in, sent people into the streets and subjected them to
homophobic taunts, beatings and arrests. The photographs are the only
documentation in existence of the party itself and the street attack,
and have been published in several newspapers and periodicals. The
photos also include the
Love-in
in front of Police Station 25, during which 47 violent arrests were
made of peaceful demonstrators, including the photographer, and
demonstrations to mark the event. SEXGARAGE was a pivotal moment in
Montreal gay history as it galvanized the community into action, to
protect the rights of gays and address homophobia in the police
force. In Aug., 2000 my 10th Anniversary photo exhibit for OKA and SEXGARAGE was
subject to a homophobic attack and dismantled at Les Vivres vegan restaurant in Montreal.
Only the SEXGARAGE artwork was destroyed. Memoirs of A Nobody in Particular Dawn One's

REBEL REBELLE- PUNKS & PROVOCATEURS is a photography exhibit of LINDA DAWN HAMMOND, AKA Dawn One.
It continues in its virtual web form. The physical
exhibit was held in Montreal at the Foufounes Electriques in April 2005 and a show is planned in Toronto, 2008, pending upon a suitable gallery space emerging.
It features over 250 photos taken from the perspective of a participant in the punk scene, from 1978 to the present.
Portrayed are people and bands from interweaving punk, alternative, hardcore, Goth and gay scenes, in Montreal, Toronto, NYC, and Europe.
The show closed with an auction of the special edition prints, with 50 percent of the net proceeds going to the charity, Medecins sans Frontieres.

2005 marked the 15th Anniversary!
A selection of my photographs of the OKA crisis, link below, were on exhibit in Warwickshire, UK, JUNE 25- AUGUST 31, 2005 at
COMPTON VERNEY. They were part of an exhibit entitled, "The American West",
curated by Jimmie Durham, a well known artist, writer and activist of Cherokee descent, alongside co-curator Richard William Hill, of Cree heritage and formerly a Curator at
the Art Gallery of Ontario. As such, a quite different, politically charged and
illuminating take on the history of this continent was presented. I feel very honoured to have been included.
Closer to home, I was interviewed by CKUT (7 MG MP3 file) , a local Montreal radio station,
as part of a week long program commemorating the OKA crisis, entitled, "OPEN CRISIS".
The 1/2 hour long interview covered my participation as alternative independent media behind the barricades.
